Mass-Propagation of Embryo-Cultured Lono Seedlings in Sorsogon
Lono is a type of coconut that occurs rarely (less than that of the makapuno) in bunches of ordinary coconut. The meat is soft, sweet, milky and be served even without processing. It is therefore significant to mass-produce this type of makapuno and this can be done through embryo culture.
A protocol on micropropagation of Lono is being established in order to produce trees bearing 100% Lono nuts.
A preliminary study on the micropropagation of 18 lono embryos has been started in the laboratory. At present, they are still on the germination stage.
