Lakatan-Makapuno Intercropping in Brgy. Del Rosario, Pilar, Sorsogon
1997

Lakatan is a fast-growing banana which has been proven to give high returns to the farmers. To maximize the use of land and to increase the farmers’ income, the feasibility of lakatan-makapuno intercrop was studied to determine if there are affects to the embryo-cultured grown makapuno.

Intercropping of Makapuno with Papaya and Other Vegetable Crops in Pilar, Sorsogon
1998

Intercropping is the simultaneous growing of other crops in a coconut area. This type of farming system offers several advantages over monocropping, such as increased land utilization, increased productivity per unit area due to yield of intercrops, more efficient use of farm labor and most importantly, increase in over-all farm income. Thus planting papaya and other vegetable crops under makapuno trees may prove profitable for the coconut farmers.

Mass-propagation of Dwarf, Self-Pollinating Makapuno Hybrids Through Embryo Culture in VISCA, Leyte
1995

The makapuno embryo-cultured trees offered a much higher production ranging from 40% to 80% for the tall cross pollinating species. VISCA developed self-pollinating makapuno trees crossed between self-pollinating dwarf and embryo-cultured makapuno tree.

Anti-microbial/Anti-viral Properties and Studies Using Coconut Monoacylglycerides (MAGs)
1996

MAGs and certain fatty acids and their derivatives were found to affect the envelope of certain viruses and can cause cell lysis for some bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria (hospital isolates) were found to be sensitive to MAGs. Staphylococcus gave highest response to MAGs.

Study on Hydroponics Using Coconut Coir as Root Anchorage
1996

Coconut coir with its good water-holding capacity and strong fiber can possibly be used for root anchorage in hydroponic system. The study aimed to determine the feasibility of using coconut coir system and thus expand its utilization. Tomato (Maigaya variety) was used as test plant for the study.
