Isolation and Identification of Organisms Associated with Makapuno Seedling Wilt
January 4, 1985

Culturing of makapuno embryos in vitro is still confronted with a number of problems such as the failure of some embryos to germinate and to form shoots and roots, the presence of contaminants in the culture medium, etc. This study was prompted by the high mortality in makapuno seedlings. The makapuno seedling wilt is not caused by microorganisms but by sparseness of the root system of the seedlings.

Design and Development of a Digital Moisture Meter for Copra
January 10, 1985

The design and fabrication of the capacitance-type circuit of the moisture meter was successful, however, upon recommendation of the proponent, the project was prematurely terminated as difficulties were encountered in designing an appropriate probing or sensoring device.

Process Simplification for the Commercial Production of Diesel Fuel from Coconut Oil Using NIST Process
January 10, 1985

The neutralization process of copra oil with high FFA content was established. The methyl ester product was analyzed for its composition and properties and compared with commercial petrol and ASTM classification for Grade 2D diesel fuel. Results obtained in the analysis were comparable.

Resource Productivity of Selected Coconut-based Farming Systems and their Improvement: The Mindanao Case
January 1, 1986

Five municipalities were initially surveyed. Two municipalities (Mariano Marcos and Kabacan) were chosen as experimental sites. Intercropping of annual crops such as corn, rice, sorghum, and mung, under coconut trees resulted in lower yields compared to their yield potentials in open areas. The reduction in yield was attributed to shading, minimal use of fertilizer, and allellopathic effect of cogon during the first crop cycle.
